Following the DHL Stormers’ defeat to Cardiff Rugby on Friday, director of rugby John Dobson conveyed his disappointment, providing a straightforward assessment of a performance that fell short in key moments against a determined home team.
“The performance was deeply disappointing,” Dobson remarked.
“We have to give credit to Cardiff; their sense of urgency was clear. Unfortunately, their need to win outweighed our opportunities for securing a play-off spot in Cape Town. Their attacking approach was commendable and applied considerable pressure on our defense. They advanced effectively against us, demonstrating smart offensive tactics.”
Dobson pointed out the missed opportunities and frequent errors in critical areas, particularly near the try line.
“We had control in moments that we let slip, which is reminiscent of last week. Our failure to capitalize when five meters out is troubling. The lack of progress in that area is concerning for us.”

As this result marks a setback during a critical phase of the season, he acknowledged the unfortunate timing of the loss but stressed the importance of a quick response from the team.
“We need to come together. This is our first URC away defeat this year outside South Africa, and it comes at a challenging time. We recognize this team’s potential, and we will rebuild and recover swiftly.”
Despite Andre-Hugo Venter’s early exit, there was some positive news on the injury front, as Dobson confirmed the squad mostly emerged unscathed from the match.
“There are no major injury concerns. We’re a battered team, having been outplayed by a better side tonight.”
Looking ahead to the knockout phase, the Stormers are set to face the same Welsh team in the quarter-finals. Dobson emphasized the need for improved performance for the Stormers to progress in the tournament.
“We must be significantly better than we were in this quarter-final,” he asserted.
