Xanti Pupuma, the coach of Milford, expresses strong confidence in his team’s capacity to capitalize on their early performances this season against Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns, which have notably enhanced their morale in the Betway Premiership.
The Stallions continued their remarkable performance on Sunday, earning a decisive 5-1 victory over Richards Bay in their inaugural competitive derby at Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium.
This win has reinforced Milford’s position in the league, propelling them to fifth place with 11 points across seven games, consisting of three victories, two draws, and two losses so far this season.
Pupuma credits the confidence fueling Milford’s robust performances to their opening match of the season against the reigning champions, Orlando Pirates.
Although they suffered a 2-0 loss in that encounter, their effort against the champions sparked a belief within the squad that they could compete at the highest level of South African football.

“Competing against Orlando Pirates in our first encounter really boosted our self-belief and demonstrated that we can hold our own in this league,” Pupuma remarked.
“We went up against the champions and stood our ground. We controlled possession and created difficulties for them.
“This group of players has developed a strong camaraderie. They are ready to give everything for one another.
“They grasp my vision for the style of play I envision. Our training sessions are designed to equip them for various scenarios.
“They are young, but they are maturing and proving their capability to perform at this level.”
Milford showcased similar competitiveness when facing Mamelodi Sundowns. Despite another defeat against the African champions, the Stallions once again exhibited their capabilities and potential to control portions of the match.
Following the derby victory on Sunday, Pupuma praised his players for justifying the trust he has shown in them, emphasizing that the occasion meant more than mere technical execution.
“I am genuinely impressed and proud of them,” he said.
“This was their chance to shine and display their talents for all of South Africa, and they are showing their appreciation for my support.
“I couldn’t be more delighted for them, and I hope they can sustain this level of play. I believe that Sunday’s match was driven more by their determination than solely technical skills, which is why I felt we started strong.
“Everyone associated with the team from the beginning shares the dream of participating in such a derby.
“I expect them to give everything they have, and they certainly did. Even when facing challenges, they played for one another.
“I hope future matches continue to highlight passion and heart over pure technique, which has traditionally characterized derby games.”
The victory over Richards Bay now paves the way for Milford to prepare for another derby, as they gear up to face Durban City in the KZN Derby this Sunday.
Milford aims to harness this momentum for their upcoming match and secure another win before the FIFA international break, with the league set to pause following this weekend’s fixtures.
