Conor Benn Discusses His Next Steps Following Devastating Second Round KO Loss to Ryan Garcia

CONOR BENN has offered thoughts on what the future holds after his difficult defeat to Ryan Garcia, admitting that he currently has no clear direction regarding his boxing career.

The British athlete’s dreams of winning a world title were abruptly dashed in Las Vegas when Garcia, 28, concluded the bout in just four minutes and 25 seconds.

Worryingly for Benn, the WBC welterweight champion barely encountered resistance before delivering a crushing blow.

Garcia swiftly found his rhythm, landing a decisive right hand that knocked Benn down in the second round.

The American continued to apply relentless pressure until referee Thomas Taylor stepped in, putting an end to Benn’s ordeal.

This lopsided defeat has raised serious questions about Benn’s future in the sport.

Benn stepped into the boxing world at an elevated level without following the typical path through the Area, English, British, Commonwealth, and European titles.

This has sparked intense debate over whether he deserved an opportunity for a world title shot.

Despite his notable matches against Chris Eubank Jr and a victory over former world champion Regis Prograis, the way in which Garcia dispatched Benn is sure to intensify these discussions.

At 29, Benn contemplated his future in a heartfelt social media post, saying: “Everyone keeps asking, ‘What’s next for Conor Benn?’”

“The truth is, I don’t have the answer.”

He went on to say: “If you’d asked the 19-year-old me if I thought I’d still be here a decade later, after everything I’ve experienced, I’d have called you crazy.”

Benn also noted that his family has made significant sacrifices due to his boxing career, emphasizing that his children have “missed time with their Dad” while he chased his dreams.

Rather than hurrying to plot a comeback, Benn mentioned that his immediate priority is quite simple.

He stated: “So when people ask me what’s next for Conor Benn, at present, the answer is clear: time with my kids.”

Benn expressed appreciation for those who traveled to Las Vegas and the fans who woke up early to support him, affirming that he would never take their loyalty for granted, “especially during those nights when things don’t go as planned.”

However, once the dust settles, Benn and his team will have to face the substantial decision about his future actions.

Typically, a rebuilding phase would involve easing back in with a few lower-risk fights, but this might prove challenging given Benn’s agreement for a multi-fight deal with Dana White’s Zuffa Boxing.

White has made a name for himself in the UFC by matching prominent fighters competitively instead of shielding them, suggesting that Benn might not have the option for an extensive rebuilding period.

A trilogy fight with Eubank Jr appears to be the most apparent lucrative avenue if Benn opts to continue his career.

Benn has already fought Eubank twice at middleweight and has previously expressed a willingness to face his rival in a higher weight class at 168lbs.

This might become a more attractive proposition after Benn struggled to make the 147lb welterweight limit for the Garcia match.

For now, thoughts of another fight are the last thing on his mind.

Benn will also face a medical suspension after the knockout, as athletes are typically required to adhere to mandatory rest periods imposed by athletic commissions following bouts, especially after stoppage losses.

The precise trajectory of his future remains uncertain.

Yet, after this tough night in his career, one thing Benn is certain of is that boxing can wait while he cherishes valuable time with his family.
