According to Sportswire, the South African Football Association (SAFA) is currently facing a stalemate regarding the head coaching position for Bafana Bafana, significantly affected by the critical SAFA presidential election scheduled for 12 September.
Insiders indicate that once the election concludes, SAFA may decide to either renew or finalize its contract with Hugo Broos.
Broos’ contract expires at the end of July, placing SAFA at a crucial junction: to extend his contract or to pursue a new head coach.
Additionally, Broos is returning from Belgium later this month and has not yet submitted his official technical report following Bafana Bafana’s impressive showing in the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
While SAFA has publicly affirmed its intention to discuss the national team’s future with Broos, sources suggest that this formal review meeting has not yet taken place.
Consequently, the SAFA Technical Committee has not yet formally begun the search for a new head coach. Disagreements within the committee are complicating the decision-making process.
Adding to the complexity is the upcoming SAFA elective conference on 12 September, where current president Danny Jordaan faces opposition from AmaZulu FC president Sandile Zungu.
It’s noteworthy that the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers will commence just a week after the election.
In response to recent media reports claiming that SAFA extended Broos’ contract for an additional year through the 2027 AFCON, SAFA has issued a statement categorically refuting these claims.
An insider from SAFA revealed that the organization was compelled to issue a formal denial after inquiries from commercial partners like Adidas and Standard Bank.
“The South African Football Association (SAFA) is alarmed by the reports and rumors circulating from established media outlets that claim Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has received a one-year contract extension,” the association stated.
“SAFA firmly asserts that these reports are inaccurate, unsubstantiated, and misleading.
“To clarify, SAFA has not issued any contract regarding the Bafana Bafana head coach position. Coach Hugo Broos remains under contract with SAFA until the end of July 2026, per his current agreement.
“The governance processes regarding the Bafana Bafana technical team are still in progress. No decisions have been made, and no contracts have been issued or ratified by the National Executive Committee.”
SAFA also pointed out that reports claiming Broos has already signed a new contract have spurred unnecessary speculation.
“It is regrettable that claims have emerged suggesting that Coach Broos has already been offered a contract extension, with some sources remaining unnamed.
“Such reporting promotes unnecessary speculation, misleads the public, and undermines the Association’s established decision-making procedures.”
While Broos had indicated a desire to retire from full-time coaching after the 2026 World Cup, the 74-year-old has mentioned that he is open to a technical advisory position within the association. With 55 years of experience in professional football as both player and manager, Broos does not envision himself managing from the sidelines at the age of 78 for the 2030 World Cup.
In its statement, SAFA also requested media organizations to seek comments before publishing related stories.
“SAFA calls on all media outlets to uphold the highest standards of responsible journalism by allowing the Association an opportunity to respond before publishing any allegations or claims regarding its operations,” the statement continued.
“A simple request for comment would enable SAFA to verify the facts and help prevent the dissemination of unfounded reports.
“SAFA remains dedicated to transparent communication and will issue an official announcement regarding the Bafana Bafana coaching position once the necessary internal processes are completed, and pertinent decisions are made by the Association’s governing bodies.
“The Association expresses gratitude to its stakeholders and the public for their continued support, encouraging them to rely exclusively on official SAFA channels for accurate updates concerning national team affairs.”
