Bennet Mokoena, an emerging star from Mamelodi Sundowns, has announced that he has achieved one of his key goals this season by earning a spot in the club’s first team, though he is still eager for more playing time.
The talented striker had a remarkable season in the DStv Diski Challenge, finishing as the league’s top scorer with an impressive tally of 22 goals in 26 matches.
Despite his exceptional performance at the reserve level, Mokoena found limited opportunities with the first team as he developed within the senior squad. Additionally, Sundowns narrowly missed out on the Reserve League title, which ultimately went to Orlando Pirates.
At just 19 years old, he had a standout moment in his early career by scoring against Bundesliga side RB Leipzig during the Red Bull Diski Last Namba tournament.
Mokoena’s goal played a significant role in Sundowns achieving a solid 3-1 victory in that match.

“My goals were to be promoted to the first team, become a crucial player, and assist the team in winning the league,” Mokoena mentioned in the club’s magazine.
“Although we didn’t secure the league title, we did finish as the highest-scoring team, which I take pride in. I accomplished most of the objectives I set for myself.”
The forward also reminisced about the game that led to his first-team selection, recalling his impressive performance against Durban City, where he scored four goals to demonstrate his potential.
“That match was a pivotal moment. Scoring four goals and then receiving a call-up to the first team felt surreal. It elevated my confidence and motivated me to work even harder,” Mokoena shared.
Despite his outstanding season in the DStv Diski Challenge, Mokoena is determined to continue improving and solidifying his role in the senior squad.
“I aim to keep enhancing my skills, learning, and hopefully earning more minutes with the first team. I want to enjoy my football and keep progressing,” he concluded.
