Springbok assistant coach Mzwandile Stick and captain Siya Kolisi adopted a humble perspective regarding their chances of becoming the first Bok team to secure back-to-back Rugby Championship titles. As they gear up to meet the Pumas in the championship’s grand finale at Allianz Stadium, Twickenham, this Saturday, they underscored that achieving a top-notch performance remains their foremost priority ahead of the Test.
As the Springboks lead the standings by a point ahead of the All Blacks, they will fully grasp the scenarios necessary to clinch the trophy for a second consecutive year as they prepare to take the field.
Nonetheless, Stick and Kolisi conveyed that their main focus is on team growth, especially with a demanding five-week tour to the UK and Europe set for November.
“While the thrill of breaking records and winning championships is undeniable, our attention will be on the quality of our play, particularly with a testing end-of-year tour fast approaching,” Stick noted.
“Thus, our primary concern is the match against Argentina and ensuring we deliver a solid 80-minute performance. Last week’s results (the Boks’ 67-30 victory over the Pumas) are in the past, and we’ve certainly gleaned important lessons from that game, especially given that we only had a two-point lead at halftime.
“In last week’s game, while we scored, they quickly replied, and we conceded penalties that kept them in contention. Analyzing Argentina closely, they’ve secured victories against both New Zealand and Australia, so it would be unwise not to learn from our previous mistakes.
“They’re a strong team, and they will be motivated to make their mark as a passionate rugby nation. With a squad packed with world-class talent and seasoned players mentoring the younger ones, it’s crucial for us to establish a solid foundation up front and for the backs to perform with skill.”
Kolisi echoed Stick’s words, stating: “Last week’s match was intense, and we only found our rhythm in the final 20 minutes. While we can’t determine the outcome, the magnitude of this match is significant, and we’re excited to rise to the occasion.”
The Bok captain further remarked: “Several players in our squad haven’t won the Castle Lager Rugby Championship yet, and we aim to honor them by making this a memorable game. However, our priority isn’t on record-setting; it’s about our performance and giving our all tomorrow.”
Reflecting on Argentina’s team, Stick added: “We’ve evaluated their lineup, and many players have roots in Sevens rugby, which means if we don’t bring our A-game, we could face a tough challenge.
“I expect it to be a grueling matchup, and just as some of our younger players have risen to the occasion recently, their emerging players will too want to take their chance to shine.”
“They will come prepared both mentally and emotionally, and with their supporters rallying behind them, we know that if we make mistakes, they have the skill to capitalize on them.”
The match is set to kick off at 15:00 and will be broadcast live on SuperSport.
