Springbok center Damian de Allende and prop Thomas du Toit emphasized that the squad has shifted its focus from the impressive 67-30 victory over Argentina in Durban. They expressed eagerness for a challenging showdown against the Pumas this Saturday, which marks the final game of the Rugby Championship at Allianz Stadium, Twickenham.
The players reiterated that although the match is set on neutral ground, both teams will have considerable support in London, promising an exhilarating conclusion to the tournament.
“We’ve played here several times, and even if it’s neutral territory, we anticipate strong support for Argentina, which will make it a true Test match,” De Allende remarked.
“I wouldn’t say that playing in London is easier than in Argentina. Travel was indeed simpler, and we didn’t deal with jetlag, but it remains neutral ground, and neither side has an advantage.”
“That said, we are thrilled for this game. I believe over 60,000 tickets have been sold, which will create a fantastic atmosphere.”
Du Toit, who plays for Bath in England, shared his outlook and anticipates a diverse crowd at the match.
“Since I compete in club rugby here in the UK, it feels almost like a home game for me,” Du Toit commented.
“That said, Argentina also attracts significant support here, so we expect to see many Argentine flags on Saturday.”
The Boks are entering the match as favorites, with a narrow one-point lead over New Zealand—who will face Australia earlier in Perth—but both players cautioned against expecting another blowout against a skilled Argentine side.
“We approach every match as a fresh challenge, so we’ve prepared this week just as we would for any other Test,” Du Toit clarified.
“It’s about returning to the fundamentals and sticking to our game plan, as last week’s result is behind us. This game is new, and what happened in Durban isn’t relevant.”
De Allende echoed this sentiment: “Argentina will come out fighting. They may not be in the race for the title, but they’ve already beaten New Zealand, Australia, and the British & Irish Lions this year, so we must stay sharp to secure the result we desire.”
On a personal note, Du Toit, a regular in the lineup this season, praised the team’s depth and Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus for creating a squad where every player can shine, thanks to the thoughtful use of the bench.
“I’ve always understood my role, whether I start or come off the bench, and being part of this squad and the Rugby Championship has been an incredible journey,” Du Toit mentioned.
“It’s comforting to know that you can give your all on the field, aware that someone equally skilled is ready to step in, which makes this team truly remarkable.”
Both players remain centered on the key goal this Saturday—to defend their Rugby Championship title—following the announcement by World Rugby regarding the draw process for the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia earlier this week.
“The Rugby World Cup is two years away, so we can’t look too far ahead,” De Allende stated.
“This match is the most crucial game for us this year. It feels like a Final, so as a team, we are dedicating all our energy to prepare as thoroughly as possible for this contest.”
Du Toit added: “Success is always vital for us, especially as Springboks. While the RWC may be on our minds, our primary focus is on this weekend’s match, so despite the excitement, we cannot dwell on what’s ahead in two years.”
