Sportswire has announced that the Kaizer Chiefs and Cape Town Spurs presented their respective cases on Monday regarding the ongoing issue involving players Asanele Velebayi and Luke Baartman.
The presentations will be reviewed this upcoming Friday, with a verdict from the South African Football Association (SAFA) expected next week, likely on Monday.
Velebayi and Baartman previously achieved success through the Premier Soccer League (PSL) Dispute Resolution Chamber (DRC). Spurs argued that the players remained under professional contracts, despite the club’s fall to the ABC Motsepe Regional League, which is an amateur competition.
In an attempt to secure a transfer fee for both players, Spurs advanced the matter to the SAFA Appeals Board following an unfavorable outcome at the PSL DRC.
After the players’ victories, the PSL DRC enforced its regulations by designating them as free agents—Chiefs quickly signed Velebayi and Baartman. However, Spurs’ appeal to the SAFA Appeals Board has barred Chiefs from utilizing either player.
Currently, Chiefs cannot field Velebayi or Baartman in the Betway Premiership due to potential point deductions by SAFA, should the ruling favor Spurs.
Spurs has also taken action concerning Liam Bern from AmaZulu, who was recently declared a free agent by the PSL DRC. Spurs has appealed this decision to the SAFA Appeals Board, hoping for a positive outcome.
AmaZulu finds itself in a predicament similar to that of Chiefs, unable to utilize Bern until SAFA provides a ruling on his case.
