Following Orlando Pirates’ unprecedented fourth consecutive MTN8 title, club director Mpume Khoza emphasized the need to focus on securing the ultimate honor: the Betway Premiership.
The Buccaneers secured the Wafa Wafa Cup with a commanding 3-0 win against Stellenbosch FC, triumphing after extra time at Mbombela Stadium on Saturday, amidst a tactical showdown.
This win represents the initial success for coach Abdelsam Ouaddou, who took over from the revered Jose Riveiro, a three-time champion of this tournament.
“First and foremost, we must express our gratitude to our supporters, as they are the 12th man propelling us forward,” Khoza stated during an interview with SuperSport TV.
The Pirates have ended as runners-up to Mamelodi Sundowns for the last three seasons, a squad that has consistently proven their prowess, unlike the Buccaneers.
Khoza further noted, “We also must acknowledge the dedicated efforts from our team, coaches, and players. When we began preseason, spearheaded initially by our chairman [Irvin Khoza], it felt like a risk, but he invested in it, and we are thankful that it has paid off in tournaments such as this. We hope that as we enter the league, everything will harmonize and come together.”
This victory signifies the 14th top-eight trophy in the club’s legacy and their fifth in the last six seasons. Khoza stressed that the management’s duty is to build upon the club’s enduring legacy by clinching more titles.
“As our chairman has highlighted, our task is to continuously enrich the history of Orlando Pirates,” said Khoza.
“The new players today, including our young captain Mbekezeli Mbokazi, achieving a fourth title in succession reflects our dedication to the club’s legacy, which holds immense significance for us.”
