Orlando Pirates’ coach Abdelsam Ouaddou labeled the MTN8 final a “tactical showdown” after his team triumphed over Stellenbosch FC, clinching their fourth title in a row.
The Buccaneers achieved a 3-0 victory in extra time at Mbombela Stadium on Saturday.
Substitutes Tshepang Moremi, who scored two goals, and Tshegofatso Mabasa were instrumental as the Pirates made history, becoming the first team to win the trophy four consecutive times.
This win marks the Pirates’ 14th top-eight trophy overall, bringing them just one shy of Kaizer Chiefs’ record.
“It was definitely a tactical encounter. As you could see, it was fiercely competitive. I told my players that minor details would be crucial in deciding the winner,” Ouaddou remarked on SuperSport TV after the match.
“I want to commend my team for their courage and faith until the very end. Our success stemmed from a solid defense, strong camaraderie, and effective teamwork as we knew we had what it took to secure the victory. That’s precisely what happened.”
Ouaddou, who stepped in as head coach during the off-season, recognized the important contributions from his substitutes.
“The substitutions were strategic. We had confidence in our bench and believed they would influence the game positively. I’m delighted for the club, our fans, and the players, and I extend my thanks to my coaching staff in South Africa for this title.”
He dedicated the win to club members who were involved in a car accident while traveling to face Chippa United before the FIFA international break.
“I want to dedicate this trophy to our goalkeeper coach, Tyron Damons, who is watching us,” Ouaddou said.
“Also, to my player Tapelo [Xoki]. We went through that accident two weeks ago, and I thank God for this title because if it weren’t for Him, we might not be in this position, considering how dire the circumstances were.
I’m overwhelmed with joy today, celebrating with the fans, my players, and all football lovers in South Africa.”
