Orlando Pirates’ head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has spoken to the media for the first time since a road traffic accident involving himself and five of his staff members.
The defending champions have commenced preparations for the MTN8 final against Stellenbosch FC, grappling with the aftermath of the accident that occurred while returning from their 3-0 victory over Chippa United in Gqeberha on July 30.
Ouaddou has decided to focus on the upcoming final, expressing his preference to not discuss the incident.
“I feel we are preparing well, as I emphasized earlier. Everyone is focused on the game; all players are eager to begin,” Ouaddou remarked.
“This match holds significant importance for our players, fans, and the club. While the club has acknowledged the incident, I believe it isn’t the right time to explore that.”
“My focus remains on the match itself. I am pleased to say that all my players are entirely committed and preparing for this occasion,” added Ouaddou.
Amabhakaniya will take on Stellenbosch at Mbombela Stadium this Saturday.
This game represents the fourth consecutive time the Pirates have reached the final of this tournament, with former coach Jose Riverio guiding them to three title victories.
Ouaddou aims to clinch the trophy, securing his first since taking over at Pirates, becoming the first South African coach in this role.
In addition, Ouaddou updated on Patrick Maswanganyi, confirming he will be back for the final after being ruled out from representing Bafana Bafana due to an injury, which saw him replaced by teammate Sipho Mbule.
“If you spot him on the pitch, it signifies that the medical team has cleared him to play,” Ouaddou said when inquired about Maswangayi’s readiness for the final.
“I’m thrilled to have him back; it doesn’t appear to be serious. It’s always distressing when players face injuries, so I’m relieved he’s with us.”
