Hugo Broos, the head coach of Bafana Bafana, has admitted that his intense desire to qualify for the FIFA World Cup resulted in feelings of “tension and nervousness,” leading to a confrontation with the Nigerian coaching staff during the draw at Toyota Stadium on Tuesday.
The situation intensified in the second half when Teboho Mokoena was subject to a rough tackle. Broos’s increasing frustration peaked in a confrontation that involved Bafana Bafana’s team manager, Vincent Tseka, and members from the Nigerian bench.
Broos and his coaching team entered the altercation, prompting the referee to intervene and calm the situation down.

After the game, Broos discussed his emotional reactions. “That’s simply the nature of the game,” he told Sportswire. “Sometimes, when I reflect on my behavior, I tell myself to relax. But honestly, the pressure and anxiety are palpable.”
He also voiced his discontent regarding the referee’s calls, highlighting a disparity in the yellow cards issued. “We received three yellow cards, whereas Nigeria had only one, which is rather unusual. I truly apologize for that. It shouldn’t occur,” he expressed.
Broos conceded that his response wasn’t the best, but attributed it to his fervent desire to achieve success. “I responded as well. I understand that I shouldn’t have, but what can you do? My goal is to win; I want to head to America next year,” he added with a laugh.

Bafana Bafana initially took the lead in the 25th minute when Nigeria’s captain, William Ekong, accidentally netted an own goal while trying to defend against a cross from Mohau Nkota.
