The Springboks have preserved their unbeaten record against the Wallabies at home since 2008, yet prop Ox Nche and fullback Aphelele Fassi expect a tough and physical encounter.
The teams will clash in the inaugural match of the Rugby Championship at Ellis Park this Saturday (17:10).
The Sharks players emphasized the importance of sticking to their core strategies for a solid beginning.
“We’ve been watching their recent showings against the British & Irish Lions; they are starting to find their groove and show improvement. They are also forming strong combinations with players who have been working together for a while, so they’ll definitely be prepared for the match,” remarked Nche, who is set to earn his 42nd cap in Johannesburg.
“Their set pieces have improved as well, and they have a formidable pack, so we anticipate they will challenge us during scrums and lineouts. We are confident they will be keen to dominate in those areas.”

Fassi echoed similar sentiments, pointing out that the Boks have been thoroughly preparing for Saturday’s clash: “We understand it will be a physically taxing game, and with their backline, we expect them to play an expansive style. However, just as they have their game plans, we have ours, and we must concentrate on executing our rugby style irrespective of their strategies.”
The skilled fullback has been nominated as one of the kicking options by Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus this week, an opportunity Fassi has embraced.
“I’ve been focusing on my kicking for a while now, even before joining the Boks this season, and I feel positive about my development,” said Fassi, who has already notched up seven tries in his 12 Tests, including a stunning effort against the Wallabies in Perth last year.
“So, when coach Rassie indicated that I would be in the mix for kicking responsibilities, I concentrated on working hard and refining my skills.”
With speculation suggesting James O’Connor may take the flyhalf position for the showdown, Fassi mentioned that their selection would not alter the Springboks’ strategy. “It doesn’t change our plan if he plays; we know what we need to execute on the field,” Fassi stated. “He’s a talented player with a good skill set and has faced us before, so we remain committed to playing the Springbok way.”
When queried about the challenges of defending their Castle Lager Rugby Championship title, Nche responded: “We may have gained a year of experience, but so have the other teams, who have also matured.”
“Observing how rival teams have performed this year, both Argentina and Australia have achieved victories against the British & Irish Lions, indicating that the competition will be tough for everyone.”
“In terms of defending our title, we will certainly do everything we can to achieve that.”
Nche also extended his warm wishes to the Springbok Women competing at the Women’s Rugby World Cup in England, stating: “We wish them immense success, and we hope they give their all while creating unforgettable moments and representing our country.”
