Kaizer Chiefs celebrated their second straight win in the Betway Premiership by narrowly defeating Polokwane City 1-0 at FNB Stadium on Wednesday evening.
The Amakhosi started the season strong, having secured a 2-0 victory in their opener against Stellenbosch on Sunday.
The match commenced positively for Chiefs, as the Phefeni Glamour Boys created several scoring chances in the first 20 minutes.
However, they failed to capitalize, with Glody Lilepo hitting the crossbar with a powerful header in the 38th minute after receiving a delivery from Gaston Sirino.
In an earlier attempt, Lilepo nearly scored with a fantastic shot from outside the box, but it was saved by Polokwane City’s Kenyan keeper, Brian Bwire, in the 27th minute.
The first half ended in a stalemate, with neither team able to score.
In the second half, Chiefs made an early substitution, introducing Nkosingiphile Ngcobo to strengthen their midfield.
Ngcobo’s introduction had an immediate impact, as Chiefs came out with renewed energy, creating additional scoring chances.
In the 64th minute, coach Khalil Ben Youssef made two more changes, bringing on Siphesihle Ndlovu and Pule Mmodi in search of the vital opening goal.
This strategy paid off when Ndlovu netted his first goal for the club in the 79th minute, with an assist from Reeve Frosler.
After taking the lead, Chiefs continued to pressure Polokwane City’s defense but were unable to increase their advantage.
This win places Chiefs in second position on the league table with six points.
Next up, they will take on Richards Bay on Tuesday, while Polokwane City will face Siwelele on the same day.
