JOSE MOURINHO has paid a heartfelt tribute to the late Jorge Costa following the tragic news of his unexpected passing.
Costa, a celebrated figure at Porto and former Charlton player, tragically died from a cardiac arrest at the age of 53 in Portugal on Tuesday.

He fell ill earlier in the day and was promptly taken to São João hospital in critical condition, but despite attempts to save him, he could not be revived.
The former defender—endearingly nicknamed “Tanque” (Tank) and “Bicho” (Animal) by teammates for his formidable playing style—served as captain for Mourinho’s Porto team that clinched the Champions League title in 2004.
Mourinho, who presently manages Turkish club Fenerbahçe, was visibly moved while recounting memories of his former player during a press conference prior to facing Feyenoord in a Champions League qualifier.
Overwhelmed with emotion, the 62-year-old was seen wiping away tears while paying homage to his late captain.
Holding back tears, Mourinho stated: “It’s a part of my history that is now lost.”
When probed about a 2022 interview in which he declared Costa to be more of a leader than just a captain, he clarified: “It’s not just the armband, but rather the representation.”
“Jorge was someone who handled the details, enabling the coach to effectively perform his duties.”
“That is the ideal scenario for a coach, having a captain who embraces these responsibilities. Naturally, I’m deeply saddened that this chapter of my life is closing.”
“But let’s set football aside and focus on Jorge and his children, whom I had known since their early years.”
“I am here now because if he were able to speak, he would tell me to keep going, to carry on with the press conference. He would insist I focus on tomorrow’s match, push me to win, and not to linger on him.”

“Thus, my objective is to fulfill my responsibilities today, complete my duties for tomorrow, and then I will permit myself to grieve.”
“However, today and tomorrow, I have obligations, and I know Jorge would want me to stay focused on my work.”
The former Chelsea and Manchester United manager reminisced about a time with Costa, sharing how during a challenging halftime discussion, Costa stepped up to manage the tough talk, saving Mourinho from reprimanding the team himself.
He recalled how Costa had asked him to wait outside, only to come out moments later and say, “coach us.” Porto eventually turned the game around to win 3-2, with Costa scoring twice.
Costa enjoyed a stellar 15-year career at Porto, winning eight league titles, in addition to the UefaCup, the Intercontinental Cup, five Taca de Portugal trophies, and eight Super Cups.
He was also a significant figure for the Portuguese National Team, earning 50 caps and winning the Portuguese Golden Ball in 2000.
After a notable playing career that included stints at Penafiel, Marítimo, and a loan at Charlton, Costa transitioned to coaching in 2006.
He started as an assistant at Braga before becoming head coach in 2007.
Costa later enjoyed a remarkable journey as a manager, working across several countries including Portugal, Tunisia, India, Romania, and France.
Ultimately, he returned to Porto in 2024 to take on the role of director of football.
He had faced health challenges in 2022, undergoing surgery after being hospitalized at Santa Cruz but ultimately made a recovery.
The news of his passing has cast a shadow over the football community.
Former clubs Porto, Braga, and Charlton have offered tributes, alongside rivals Sporting Lisbon.
Cristiano Ronaldo paid his respects on Instagram, sharing a poignant black-and-white image of Costa with the caption: “Até sempre Jorge Costa,” meaning “until forever.”
Meanwhile, former Portugal international and 1987 Ballon d’Or runner-up Paulo Futre commented, “It’s hard to comprehend. This news is immensely tragic. A truly sorrowful day for Portuguese football.
“My deepest condolences go to Jorge Costa’s family. Farewell, friend. Rest in peace.”
