Teammates Rally Around Carlotta Wamser Following Red Card for Luis Suarez-Style Handball

Germany’s defender Carlotta Wamser was left in tears following her own ‘Luis Suarez moment’ at the Women’s Euros.

In a last-ditch effort, Wamser blocked Stina Blackstenius’ shot on the German goal line, stopping Sweden from netting a third goal in their concluding Group C match.

Wamser started strong, assisting Jule Brand for an early goal by Germany.

However, Sweden quickly leveled the score with goals from Smilla Hilma Holmberg and Blackstenius.

Things worsened for Christian Wuck’s team following Wamser’s crucial moment.

At just 21 years old, she was Germany’s last line of defense when she discreetly handled Blackstenius’ shot inside the six-yard box.

The infringement didn’t go unnoticed by referee Silvia Gasperotti, who swiftly issued a red card and awarded a penalty.

Wamser, clearly heartbroken, was seen in tears as she left the pitch.

Her teammates rushed to comfort her as she departed.

Supporters on social media expressed their sympathy for the Bayer Leverkusen player, noting that she may have been attempting to shield her face.

One user commented: “She was about to get hit in the face.”

Another remarked: “That would have been a painful one, to be fair.”

A third added: “Wamser really went full Luis Suarez against Ghana.”

After the incident, Wamser held onto a glimmer of hope when VAR reviewed a potential offside before the foul.

However, that hope was quickly dashed as it was confirmed there was no offside.

The resulting penalty was successfully converted by Fridolina Rolfo, who celebrated her 100th international appearance with a goal.

Lina Hurtig then added a fourth goal in the second half, sealing a comprehensive 4-1 victory.

Both teams had already qualified for the knockout stages after winning their opening matches of the tournament.

However, this defeat means Germany will meet the winner of England’s group in the quarter-finals, with France currently in the lead.

Uruguay’s striker Suárez notoriously made a desperate hand save in the 2010 World Cup quarter-final against Ghana.

Unlike Wamser, Suárez celebrated on the sidelines when Asamoah Gyan missed the resulting penalty, allowing Uruguay to proceed via a penalty shootout.
