TS Galaxy is currently considering former Royal AM striker Sedwyn George as a possible signing for the upcoming season.
This news comes as a surprise, following Galaxy’s choice to part ways with their top striker, Dženan Zajmović, who scored nine times in 27 matches last season after joining the team at the start of the campaign.
George is now a free agent, having left Royal AM towards the end of last season. His departure was prompted by the PSL’s decision to revoke Royal AM’s membership due to a seizure by the South African Revenue Service (SARS) over alleged unpaid debts amounting to R40 million from MaMkhize’s side.
After Royal AM ceased operations, George briefly played for Highbury in the Motsepe Foundation Championship last season, but he now finds himself without a club. Several players from Royal AM, including Thabo Mahlaba, Sabelo Sithole, Siphesihle Msomi, Philani Sithebe, Shadrack Kobedi, and Ayanda Jiyane, departed before the season ended, signing with Golden Arrows.
Under FIFA regulations, these players were allowed to join any club of their choice, having not received payments for three months while at Royal AM. Their clearances were facilitated by the South African Football Association, enabling them to find new clubs quickly as Royal AM was unable to process these.
George scored once last season in a 3-1 loss against TS Galaxy on December 29, marking Royal AM’s final match in the PSL prior to their current predicament.
During his first spell with the club, known then as Royal Eagles, George notably netted 20 goals in the 2016/17 season, securing the Motsepe Foundation Golden Boot. Unfortunately, this achievement was not enough for Royal Eagles to gain promotion to the PSL.
Following that season, George moved to Cape Town Spurs, who were relegated at the end of the 2017/18 season due to a decision made after fielding an ineligible player, Tendai Ndoro.
After spending two and a half seasons at Spurs, George returned to Royal AM in the latter half of the 2019/20 season and remained affiliated with the club until its recent downfall due to issues with SARS.
