THOMAS TUCHEL indicated that Ivan Toney may face challenges with reduced playing time due to his “specialist role.”
The forward remained an unused substitute in the match against Andorra and had to wait until the 88th minute to make his appearance against Senegal.

Toney appeared crestfallen on the bench as England trailed 2-1, with Morgan Rodgers, Morgan Gibbs-White, Noni Madueke, and Jude Bellingham all entering the match before him.
He finally made his entry for the last three minutes, plus stoppage time, but was unable to impact the match as Senegal netted a third goal, finishing the game at 3-1.
After the match, Tuchel spoke with ITV about the timing of Toney’s deployment.
He commented: “Firstly, it was more than just three minutes.”
“Moreover, I believe Ivan is ideal for exactly these situations.”
“We created numerous chances alongside Gibbs-White, Ebs [Eberechi Eze], Morgan Rodgers, and Jude in their dynamic roles.”
“I think Ivan shines when we have many balls in the box, which was the case, so we had him ready after 80 minutes.”
“Then we scored, but the goal was disallowed, and it took longer than we anticipated, but that’s the quality he brings—his presence in the box and goal-scoring potential late in the game.”

Harry Kane took the starting position ahead of Toney for both matches and scored in each encounter.
After a transfer to Saudi Arabian club Al-Ahli last summer, Toney was recalled to the England squad for the first time.

Tuchel underscored Toney’s well-deserved selection for the encounters against Andorra and Senegal.
He stated: “Ivan has rightfully earned his position with us. I firmly stand by that.”
“He has netted over 20 goals for Al Ahli this season, secured a major title—the Asian Champions League—and has been instrumental in both goals and assists.”
