Chippa United’s coach Thabo September has shared an update regarding his future with the club, as his contract with the Gqeberha-based team is nearing its end at the conclusion of the current season.
The coach, hailing from the Western Cape, initially joined as a co-coach with Kwanele Kopo but took full control in December last year after the unexpected exit of the former Pretoria Callies coach.
Under his guidance, the Chilli Boys have achieved four league wins; however, they are currently on a five-game winless streak in the Betway Premiership, culminating in a 3-0 defeat to the reigning champions and current league leaders, Mamelodi Sundowns, in the capital last Wednesday.
This loss has slightly dented Chippa’s hopes for a top-eight finish, leaving them in eighth place with 30 points from 26 league games.
September’s team is now tied on points with both Kaizer Chiefs and Marumo Gallants, positioned ninth and tenth, respectively, while just one point clear of Richards Bay in eleventh and Magesi in twelfth.

Although the club has distanced itself from the relegation zone in hopes of a respectable season, the 42-year-old manager is uncertain about his future with the frequently changing ownership of Chippa Mpengesi, noting that talks concerning a new contract have not yet begun.
“No, we have not started discussions, not yet. My contract ends at the season’s end, but I have a two-year option, so we will discuss it. The signs of staying are there, but we haven’t really sat down to talk about the contract,” September stated.
In the quest to qualify for the MTN8 next season, September believes that achieving a top-eight spot is feasible with two games remaining, aiming to bridge a four-point gap amid stiff competition.
“We need to maintain professionalism to finish the season on a positive note. It’s possible to get into the top eight; if we can clinch four points from the next two games, it can be done,” added the former SuperSport United midfielder.
Chippa will take on the revitalized Gallants in their next match on Saturday, May 17, followed by a tough clash against the formidable Sundowns, who will be looking to secure maximum points in their second-to-last home game.
