Luke Keary Asked to Clarify His ‘Nearly Unwatchable’ Comments on Rugby League

LUKE Keary is reportedly facing the need to defend his comments after labeling rugby league as ‘horrendous’ and ‘almost unwatchable.’

The Australian half-back from Catalans expressed his concerns to the media back home about the current situation of the sport in the northern hemisphere.

He is now thought to have received communication from the league’s officials asking for clarification on his statements, as a potential disrepute charge looms over him.

Amid discussions of a possible NRL buy-in—though nothing official is confirmed—Keary stated that ‘they’re in a lot of trouble’ if it doesn’t happen, claiming: “The game is horrendous over here.”

“It’s the product, the coverage, and the news surrounding the game—there’s none.”

“Watching the games, they’re nearly unwatchable.”

Keary refrained from elaborating on his comments when asked at Magic Weekend, where he scored a try in Catalans’ 26-24 defeat to Leigh.

According to SunSport, the Rugby Football League has requested an explanation by sending a letter to him and his club.

Rugby League Commercial managing director Rhodri Jones countered Keary’s claims, asserting: “Our data indicates that we’re having a very positive season. Our attendance is rising, and our TV viewership, both on Sky Sports and BBC, is also increasing.”

“Luke has played at the highest level in Australia, and the game there is very much comparable to the Premier League here.”

“There are many ways we can show him that his statements may have been somewhat exaggerated.”

When asked by SunSport whether Keary would be addressed, Catalans coach Steve McNamara defended his player.

He remarked: “It’s a lengthy interview he conducted.”

“The tone and manner in which he expressed his views may have come across as aggressive.”

“However, there’s an expectation for players to voice their opinions and not always remain noncommittal.”

“He has clearly expressed his thoughts. He’s a three-time NRL Grand Final winner who loves the game and wants to see it improved across the Northern Hemisphere.”

“He’s entitled to share his opinions. I agree with several points raised, and there’s room for discussion regarding others.”
