Mamelodi Sundowns’ coach, Miguel Cardoso, has pointed to Brazilian star Lucas Ribeiro Costa as a prime candidate for the prestigious footballer of the season award, asserting that the forward deserves this recognition.
The 26-year-old has evolved into a pivotal player in the 2024/25 Betway Premiership season, with calls for his player of the season nomination emerging as early as mid-season—an undeniable testament to his talent.
At present, Ribeiro tops the league’s scoring chart with 13 goals and seven assists over 24 matches.
His remarkable performance means the Santa Helena-born player has directly influenced 20 of Sundowns’ 57 league goals, establishing a new PSL record that exceeds Downs’ previous best of 56 goals from the 2021/22 season.
However, the key player for Sundowns is experiencing a tough spell, having gone five league appearances without scoring. Despite this, the Portuguese coach is confident that Ribeiro remains the frontrunner for the player of the season award.

“I firmly believe Lucas [Ribeiro] is indeed the standout player in the league this season. His talent has not only shone this year but has truly burst onto the scene, making numerous positive contributions to the [team],” Cardoso remarked.
Reinforcing his claim, Cardoso highlighted Ribeiro’s exceptional capability to guide the Chloorkop squad throughout the season, emphasizing his unique position among all league players.
“When we examine the goals Lucas [Ribeiro] has scored, the spectacular strikes he has made, and the crucial moments where he has driven the team forward—it’s evident that while a team supports a player, Lucas has indeed brought decisive moments for the team,” the 52-year-old coach stated.
“To me, he is the favorite. I have yet to see anyone display the same level of performance over such an extended duration, even when compared to earlier years. Although the current season is critical, Lucas has shown consistent excellence over the years.
“This season, he has showcased skills that are extraordinary, stemming from both the team’s collective effort and his individual prowess. It would bring me great joy to see him receive the player of the season award, as he truly deserves it.”
Masandawana will next take on Stellenbosch FC at the Lucas Moripe Stadium this Sunday. The Tshwane giants are on course to clinch their record-extending eighth consecutive title, needing just four points to achieve this milestone.
