Mamelodi Sundowns’ head coach Miguel Cardoso expressed his enthusiasm for playing in packed stadiums during the CAF Champions League, highlighting that the energy of the crowd is what motivates their team.
At first, Cardoso noted that Loftus Stadium appeared somewhat empty at the beginning of their goalless first-leg semi-final against Al Ahly last weekend. However, he has since revised his assessment, acknowledging that the crowd quickly amassed as the game progressed.
Despite Cardoso’s initial thoughts on attendance, some Sundowns fans felt that the coach’s comments didn’t fully appreciate the situation.
Looking forward, Sundowns are gearing up to take on Al Ahly in front of a full-capacity crowd of 70,000 at the Cairo International Stadium for the return leg on Friday [18:00].
Their objective is to achieve a scoring draw, which would secure their position in the club’s third Champions League final.

This full capacity has been authorized for Al Ahly by the Egyptian government as the club aims to capture the prestigious Champions League title for the third consecutive time.
“It’s truly exciting to compete in a venue like this,” Cardoso stated during a press conference on Thursday. “Just as we experienced in Tunisia [in the second leg against ES Tunis during the quarterfinals], the enthusiasm is palpable throughout the Champions League – whether in Morocco or South Africa. I misspoke when I first looked onto the pitch and saw it empty, but it quickly became lively.
“When I am on the pitch, I concentrate on the stands rather than anything else, and it was clear that the stadium filled up, creating a wonderful atmosphere. I regret not reflecting that accurately initially.
“Playing in Johannesburg at Loftus, with many fans, and now here in Cairo with 70,000 supporters, along with unforgettable matches in Tunisia and Morocco – this is what we truly hold dear.
“These are the moments we strive for; these experiences bring us joy. Last year, when I played here [in the Champions League final with ES Tunis], the stadium was packed, and we cherished every second.
“Competing in front of a full stadium invigorates us; it empowers us. We hope to quiet the crowd with our performance, even if we hear boos and whistles, as that would mean we are doing well.
“These are the experiences we live for – moments like this. We will approach the match with immense enthusiasm, unflinching in the face of the crowd.
“The atmosphere is electric yet welcoming. There is no violence or hostility, and we look forward to another extraordinary match.”
Interestingly, Al Ahly has not claimed victory over Mamelodi Sundowns in their last seven encounters across all competitions, with the South African side enjoying a solid track record against the Egyptian club. However, Al Ahly often steps up their performance during crucial matches, as evidenced by their assertive play in the first leg at Loftus Stadium.
