Barker Discusses How CAF Success Will Boost Their Chances Against Usuthu

Stellenbosch coach Steve Barker emphasizes the high motivation within the entire Stellies squad following their remarkable performance in the CAF Confederation Cup, which he believes will serve them well in the forthcoming match against AmaZulu.

The 2023 Carling Knockout champions recently progressed to the semifinals of the Confederation Cup after defeating the previous champions, Zamalek.

Stellies are gearing up to face AmaZulu in a Betway Premiership match scheduled at Danie Craven Stadium on Wednesday [19:30].

In light of the upcoming game, Barker noted that their accomplishment in reaching the Confederation Cup semifinals has significantly boosted their motivation, which he feels will improve their performance across all upcoming Premiership games.

“It truly enhances our confidence, particularly having defeated a team like Zamalek both at home and away, and reaching the semifinals,” commented Barker, who has previously coached AmaZulu.

“The team’s confidence is elevated; there is a strong belief in one another, and the trust among players has reached a new high.

“Thus, it is vital that we maintain this momentum into our league matches, as we have six more games ahead and are ready for them, even if they won’t be straightforward.”

This match will be the second clash this season between these two rivals, following Barker’s team’s earlier commanding 5-0 victory over Usuthu. Nevertheless, Barker acknowledged that Usuthu will pose a significant challenge.

“This is a crucial match for us in the league; it’s important that we gather points considering the revised standings; we need to compete for that third position, which is essential for maintaining our continental aspirations,” he expanded.

“It’s certainly an important match against a team that has renewed its performances this season. Therefore, we expect a tough encounter, but our preparations have been meticulous.

“The environment in the camp is very optimistic after our success in reaching the semifinals of the Confederation Cup.

“However, we understand the importance of the league, so it’s imperative for us to earn three points against AmaZulu.”

At present, Stellies are fifth in the standings with 35 points from 22 matches in the Betway Premiership, while Usuthu are in seventh place with 30 points from 24 games.
