Meet Poppy McIlroy
Poppy Kennedy McIlroy was born on August 31, 2020, in Jupiter, Florida. Rory excitedly shared the news on Instagram, posting a black-and-white photo of the newborn grasping his pinky finger. “Poppy Kennedy McIlroy, born on August 31st, at 12:15pm. She is the absolute love of our lives,” he wrote.
Rory mentioned that “mother and baby are doing great” and expressed a “massive thank you” to the medical team at Jupiter Medical Center.
In an interview with Golfweek, Rory explained that he and Erica found inspiration in nature, particularly flowers, when choosing potential baby names for their daughter. They considered names such as Rose and Iris, but consistently found themselves returning to Poppy.
“We really liked [Poppy]. I have a cousin with a daughter named Poppy. We know a few other Poppies, and we just really love the name,” he shared.
Rory noted that they ruled out Rose after realizing it was too close to his mother’s name, Rosie. Several of his professional golf friends, including Alex Noran and Shane Lowry, also have daughters named Iris, leading them to choose Poppy.
“We wanted something unique, perhaps more common back home. But we ended up choosing Poppy, and we loved it,”
