Darts Star Dimitri Van den Bergh, 30, Pulls Out of Players Championship Seconds Before Match Start

DARTS star Dimitri Van den Bergh made an unexpected decision to withdraw from his match just moments before he was about to step up to the oche.

The 30-year-old was all set to face Jose de Sousa in today’s 13th Players Championship event of the year.

Van den Bergh was scheduled to take the stage for his first-round matchup at 1:25pm.

However, the PDC announced his withdrawal only four minutes before he was meant to compete.

The official statement confirmed that illness was the reason for his exit.

He was not replaced in the draw, allowing De Sousa to progress to the second round with a walkover.

The Portuguese veteran will now compete against Karel Sedlacek, who claimed an unexpected 6-3 win over James Wade.

Van den Bergh wasn’t the only player to withdraw from today’s Players Championship, as Gary Anderson also declared this morning that he would not participate.

Fortunately, there was enough time to find a replacement for Anderson in world No.144 Andreas Harryson.

Premier League stars Luke Littler, Luke Humphries, Stephen Bunting, and Rob Cross are not in attendance.

Nonetheless, Michael van Gerwen, Nathan Aspinall, Chris Dobey, and Gerwyn Price are competing.

It’s no surprise to see the Dutchman at the oche as the tournament is being held in Rosmalen, Holland, ahead of Thursday’s Premier Night in Rotterdam.
