Dean Hadley Reveals the Off-Field Key to Hull KR’s Quest for Glory

DEAN Hadley credits Hull KR’s rise to the top of the sport to an unforgettable moment spent on a beach in Tenerife, ‘staring at the stars.’

The use of journaling and breathing exercises also significantly contributes to the team’s unbeaten run.

Temporarily diverting players’ attention away from rugby league is proving to be a vital factor in their successes.

They have so far competed in nine matches, winning each one and maintaining a three-point advantage at the top of the standings.

As they gear up for a rematch against Wigan, the team that defeated them in last year’s Grand Final, back rower Hadley revealed the factors behind coach Willie Peters’ success.

Additionally, taking his children to various sports training sessions has its benefits.

Hadley remarked: “Willie places a lot of importance on that part of the game, and he implemented it when he came on board – I truly believe it makes a difference.

“In the present moment, it might not be obvious, but it’s those little extras that genuinely help later.

“While it may not be for everyone, the trick is to find what suits you. We often do group breathing exercises – dimming the lights and practicing different patterns.

“Visualization techniques and journaling are also included. If it helps you on the field, why not try it?

“There’s definitely a crossover effect. Engaging in one or two of these activities allows you to relax or disconnect, which ultimately aids you during game time.

“Competing at our level in rugby league requires reaching a certain mental state before a match. Learning to switch off is equally crucial to avoid burnout.

“Having two kids is certainly advantageous. They engage in sports, so I’m often taking them to their training sessions.

“This encompasses both rugby league and football – my son plays rugby at Skirlaugh, and my daughter plays football.

“Family life greatly assists in the ability to disconnect – they become the main focus. Given the demanding nature of our profession, ensuring your happiness and enjoyment in what you do is essential.”

Despite initial hesitations from players, Peters’ unconventional methods—including avoiding the chilly waters of East Yorkshire beaches in winter—have proven effective as the Rovers strive to improve upon last year’s loss at Old Trafford.

He added: “Gazing at the stars on the beach probably wasn’t something the players initially enjoyed. I even attempted to persuade them to go into the water – they were not keen.

“This was part of a mindfulness initiative we embarked on. During our time in Tenerife, we held early morning meditation sessions.

“It was an unfamiliar and novel experience for them, yet closely tied to our practices on the field. There were quite a few complaints at first, though.

“We have introduced a mental skills program, and the players have reacted positively. The mental aspect truly can make a considerable difference.

“I fully stand behind this approach. Participating in these activities can enhance self-esteem, and if the players buy into this concept, we have effectively achieved our aims.

“In the end, it’s the mindset that separates good players from the great ones.”
