There have been four recorded sinkings in the Men’s Boat Race. The first incident occurred in 1912, when both boats sank due to severe weather. In 1951, the Oxford crew’s boat sank, followed by Cambridge in 1978. The most infamous sinking took place in 1984, when a Cambridge boat collided with a tugboat and broke apart. This remains the last sinking in the men’s race, although in 2016, the Cambridge women’s team managed to finish despite their boat taking on water.
