On Wednesday, the organization declared a groundbreaking total of 351 medal events for the 2028 Games, which will also feature newly added sprint-distance swimming events and mixed-gender competitions in artistic gymnastics and golf.
The LA 2028 Games will showcase the Olympic debuts of the 50m backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly events for both male and female competitors, in addition to a mixed 4x100m relay on the track.
This announcement has been hailed as a significant milestone by renowned Team GB athlete Adam Peaty.
Peaty, who is a three-time Olympic champion and four-time European champion in the 50m breaststroke, shared his aspiration to compete in a fourth Olympics on his Instagram account.
The 30-year-old affirmed: “The 50m Sprint Events have just been added to the LA 28 Games, confirming my ambition for a fourth Olympic appearance.
“This is a tremendous advancement for our remarkable sport and will motivate more people to participate and remain committed to it.
“I extend my gratitude to World Aquatics for this exceptional decision. I am optimistic about the next three years.”
The swimming competitions in LA will take place at the SoFi Stadium—the home ground of the LA Chargers—expected to be the largest swimming venue in Olympic history, with a seating capacity of 38,000.

Peaty won gold in the Olympic 100m breaststroke during his debut in Rio 2016 and successfully defended his title in Tokyo 2020, where he also secured gold in the 4x100m mixed medley.
After facing health challenges, including a positive Covid-19 test, he earned a silver medal in Paris last year, with Nicolo Martinenghi winning the gold.

The historic LA Games will feature 10,500 athletes competing in 31 diverse sports as part of the initial programming.
With a strong emphasis on gender equality, the IOC has stated that there will be more female athletes (5,333) than male athletes (5,167).
For the first time in Olympic history, all team sports will have an equal number of women’s teams as men’s teams.
Two additional women’s teams will be incorporated into the water polo event, while a new weight class has been added in women’s boxing.
The women’s football competition will expand from 12 to 16 teams, and the men’s tournament will decrease from 16 to 12.
Five new sports have been suggested for the Games, including the popular American sports baseball/softball, flag football, T20 cricket, lacrosse, and squash.
An IOC statement remarked: “The LA28 program reflects a considerate balance of tradition and evolution.
“It celebrates excellence while adapting to the necessary evolution of the Olympic Games.”
As the 2028 Games are set to take place from July 14 to July 30, it will establish Los Angeles as the third city to host the Summer Olympics three times, joining London and Paris.
