Kaizer Chiefs’ head coach, Nasreddine Nabi, stated that he would graciously step down if the club’s board chooses not to retain him for the next season.
Nabi, who entered into a two-year contract with the Chiefs during the recent off-season, responded to inquiries about his future at the club during a press conference on Thursday, ahead of the Nedbank Cup semi-final matchup against Mamelodi Sundowns at Loftus Stadium this Sunday.
This question stemmed from the Chiefs’ inconsistent performance since he took over, as the team has found it challenging to establish a steady winning rhythm and a solid game strategy.
At present, they are enduring a four-match winless streak, which includes two losses and one draw, and they have conceded 29 goals in league matches, ranking as the third highest in the division.
Moreover, Chiefs risk missing out on the MTN8 for next season, as they are currently in eighth place in the Betway Premiership standings, accumulating 30 points from 24 matches, a significant 28 points behind league leaders Sundowns.

The Nedbank Cup offers the Chiefs their last opportunity to end a decade-old trophy drought. They will face Sundowns in the semi-finals, a team that has bested them three times this season, including a 4-0 loss in the Carling Knockout Cup, intensifying concerns regarding their prospects.
Indeed, Sundowns have triumphed in six out of their seven encounters with the Chiefs across all competitions.
Recognizing the formidable challenge posed by Sundowns, Nabi emphasized that his achievements should not be judged solely on the results of this season, as he is aiming for a long-term vision.
“I understand your question and the implications behind it,” Nabi remarked.
“However, I will respond to your inquiry with respect. I am not here to assert whether I deserve to remain or not.”
“There is a board in place, and we work collaboratively; they assess the situation, observe each training session, and attend all pre and post-match discussions.”
“They are aware of our efforts. If they conclude that I should not continue next season, I will leave. If they believe I should stay, I will continue.”
“What is important is that I am present, dedicated to my work; I have a contract, a process, and ambitions that I trust.”
“Thus, I must continue striving forward. It is not my decision whether I stay or depart.”
“However, I get the impression that you do not wish for me to stay,” Nabi concluded, leading to laughter among the media before the press conference came to a close.
