The match at Selhurst Park was overshadowed by a serious injury to Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta, alongside inappropriate chants from certain Millwall fans.

Two specific songs sung during the first half caught the FA’s attention.

The governing body remarked: “Millwall FC has been charged with misconduct related to crowd management during the FA Cup match against Crystal Palace FC on Saturday, March 1.”

“It is alleged that during the 5th and 20th minutes, the club failed to ensure that its spectators and/or supporters (and anyone posing as supporters) behaved in an orderly fashion, refraining from using language or engaging in actions that are improper, offensive, abusive, indecent, or insulting, especially concerning sexual orientation.”

In response, Millwall released a statement on Thursday morning to address the concerns.

The Championship team stated: “Millwall Football Club acknowledges The Football Association’s decision to charge the club regarding breaches of rule E21 following the Emirates FA Cup match against Crystal Palace on Saturday, March 1, 2025.”

“The chant in question is categorically condemned by Millwall Football Club, which reiterates its zero-tolerance stance against all forms of discrimination.”

“The club is committed to actively working to eradicate homophobic chanting and any discriminatory behavior from the sport.”

“This is part of the club’s leading anti-discrimination initiative, All ‘Wall, which is promoted at every match and overseen by its engaged Equality Steering Committee.”

“The organization collaborates with Millwall Community Trust to cultivate a secure, inclusive space for the LGBTQ+ community, particularly through its two LGBTQ+ teams, Millwall Romans and Millwall Pride.”

“Both of these highly successful teams continue to grow in participant numbers, united in a welcoming atmosphere through their shared love for football and Millwall.”

“Everyone associated with Millwall Football Club must act as representatives of the club. The supportive culture surrounding the organization is characterized by passion, loyalty, family, and distinctiveness, and any form of discrimination will not be tolerated.”

“If you witness any racist, homophobic, misogynistic, tragedy chanting, or any other discriminatory abuse during Saturday’s home match against Middlesbrough, please utilize the club’s dedicated ‘Hear Hate? Don’t Hesitate’ reporting service by texting ‘HATE’ followed by your message to 66777, or by emailing slo@millwallfc.co.uk.”

Millwall goalkeeper Liam Roberts received a red card after a perilous karate kick on Mateta, resulting in a severe cut behind the French striker’s ear.

Japhet Tanganga’s own goal gave Palace an early lead, with Daniel Munoz extending their advantage.

Wes Harding pulled one back for Millwall just before half-time.

Ultimately, Eddie Nketiah sealed the match for Palace late in the game.

Palace moved on past Fulham in the quarter-finals and will face Aston Villa at Wembley on April 26 for a chance to reach the final.
