His brother Eliceo, who has been urging people on social media to keep Helar in their prayers, confirmed yesterday that his brother succumbed to his injuries later that same day.
He reported that Helar’s cause of death following Sunday’s incident was a ruptured artery in his head.
The saddened club, Real Titan Nc, shared their sorrow in a statement: “Rest in peace, dear friend.
“Your devotion to football and love for your family will always be remembered. Your passing leaves us heartbroken.
“We extend our deepest condolences to your family during this trying period. They are not alone; Titan stands by them, and the entire football community is with them.”
The club also posted live footage of Helar’s coffin being transported in a white hearse to a funeral home ahead of the wake, along with a video showcasing the goals he scored earlier this year before his untimely demise.
The tragic incident occurred in the 70th minute of a Copa Peru match between Helar’s team and Defensor Nueva Cajamarca.
Video clips captured players surrounding him as he was carried out on a stretcher, unconscious, while a teammate assisted with placing him into the ambulance that hurries him to a hospital in Moyobamba, a northern Peruvian city.
A commentator noted as he was taken away: “We wish for his quick recovery and hope he shows signs of life soon.”
Jose, Helar’s father, who was present at the game, struggled to hold back his tears as he spoke to a local TV station: “I want to express my heartfelt thanks to everyone for their support during this painful time.
“Helar dreamt of being a remarkable soccer player from a young age and often talked about striving for excellence in the game.
“I believe his team will dedicate all their future victories to him.
“Initially, when I saw the collision, I thought it involved another player and didn’t immediately realize it was my son.
“I wanted to run onto the pitch to be by Helar’s side once I realized it was him, but I was held back and could only see him at the hospital when he was in critical condition.”
Helar’s funeral is set for Friday.
The Peruvian Football Federation expressed their condolences on X: “We mourn the loss of Helar Gonzales Altamirano.
“Our deepest sympathies go out to his family, friends, and Real Titan Club.”
