Sihle Nduli’s goal in the 80th minute sent Stellenbosch into the semi-finals of the CAF Confederation Cup on Wednesday evening at Cairo International Stadium, facing Zamalek.
Both teams approached the match after a goalless draw in the first leg played in South Africa last week.
The only goal for Stellenbosch came in the second half from 29-year-old Nduli.
Both teams began the match with high energy, showcasing aggressive forward plays and skillful maneuvers.
The visitors had an early chance in the 14th minute, but Andre De Jong’s shot went over the bar. Just three minutes later, Zamalek almost broke the deadlock but missed their opportunity.

After 20 minutes, Stellenbosch’s strong performance began to slip as the home side gained control, working to change the scoreline. Fortunately for Stellenbosch, Zamalek could not capitalize on their numerous scoring chances.
In the second half, Steve Barker implemented tactical adjustments, substituting Lesiba Nku and Chumani Butsaka for Devin Titus and Genino Palace.
Stellenbosch refocused and started the second half on a positive note, but they struggled to convert their chances into goals.
The 2023 Carling Knockout champions maintained pressure and nearly scored in the 64th minute, but Nku’s shot was saved by Mohamed Moussa.
After Nku’s attempt, Barker opted to bring in Sanele Barns and Khomotjo Lekoloane for De Jong and Ashley Cupido. Shortly after these changes, Stellenbosch thought they had earned a penalty, but the referee determined no foul was committed against Thato Khiba.
With just 10 minutes left in regulation, Nduli scored the crucial goal to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. Moments later, Zamalek had a prime opportunity to equalize but failed to convert.
This win advances Stellenbosch to the semi-finals of the Confederation Cup, where they will join Fadlu Davids’ Simba, who triumphed over Al Masry earlier on Wednesday afternoon.
In their first appearance in a continental tournament, Stellenbosch is proving their mettle by knocking out the defending champions.
