Nemanja Matic Criticizes Andre Onana: Labeled ‘One of the Worst Goalkeepers in Manchester United History’ Amidst Jabs

ANDRE ONANA received criticism from Manchester United legend Nemanja Matic ahead of the Red Devils’ Europa League clash with Lyon.

The former Serbian international, Matic, now 36, has joined the French side after spending five seasons with United from 2017 to 2022.

Matic was not pleased with the remarks made by the Man Utd goalkeeper prior to the highly-anticipated match.

Cameroon international Onana asserted: “I believe we are stronger than them; we just need to go there and show who we are.”

“If we approach with a winning mentality and stay focused, maintaining our compactness and unity while sticking to our game plan, victory will be within reach.”

“We know some of their players, but our primary focus should be on our own performance,” he added.

“It won’t be easy, but I truly believe we are the better team.”

In response, Matic issued a sharp comeback.

The ex-Chelsea player stated: “Making such claims requires evidence to back it up.”

“Onana? Pfft, while I respect everyone, if you make such statements, be ready for the pushback.”

“If you’re ranked among the worst goalkeepers in Manchester United’s history, you should be cautious with your words.”

“If David de Gea, Peter Schmeichel, or Van der Sar had said that, I would take a hard look at myself.”

“If you’re statistically one of the worst goalkeepers in Man Utd’s recent past, you need to prove you’re better before making such claims.”

Matic also reflected on the significant differences between his time at Chelsea, where he won two Premier League titles, and Manchester United, where he left without silverware.

He conveyed to The Athletic: “The primary difference I felt after joining Chelsea was the unwavering emphasis on winning results and trophies.”

“That mentality was felt across the club—from the groundskeeper to the owner. Roman Abramovich would only ask about our results.”

“At United, the approach felt more business-like. I started to notice that after a few months.”

“I joined United with the intention of winning titles like I did at Chelsea, but gradually I felt that winning was not the priority.”

“I recognize the need to ensure that salaries are met, but achieving results didn’t seem as urgent as it was at Chelsea.”

“I may have done a couple of promotional tasks at Chelsea, but at United, it was a far greater burden.”
