Maela: Understanding the Impact of the Riveiro Announcement

Innocent Maela, the Orlando Pirates captain, offered his perspective on how the team is coping with the startling news of Jose Riveiro’s impending departure from the club at the end of the season, signaling the conclusion of a trophy-laden era.

Last Thursday, the Soweto giants revealed that the Spanish manager, who commenced his tenure in June 2022, would be leaving after opting not to renew his contract, which expires at the close of the current season.

During his time with the club, Riveiro reshaped the Pirates into contemporary cup champions, clinching three consecutive MTN8 titles – a remarkable feat in PSL history. Moreover, the 49-year-old tactician guided the team to consecutive Nedbank Cup triumphs, and they are currently positioned in the semi-finals of this season’s tournament.

As the date of Riveiro’s departure approaches, the captain conveyed how the rest of the team is managing the situation, highlighting their unified decision to remain focused on finishing the season strong in the remaining competitions.

“We had conversations and agreed that our focus should remain on the competitions that still lie ahead. We trust that there will be a time to reflect on everything later,” commented Maela.

“For the moment, we need to concentrate on effectively executing the game plan that will be in place, starting Thursday with our match against Orlando [vs MC Alger].

“Eventually, we will address that, but it is essential right now that we train hard and ensure our performance in our upcoming matches is strong.”

Meanwhile, the Bucs’ coach shares similar sentiments, asserting that his exit is not a pressing issue at this time, particularly as the schedule ramps up towards the season’s end.

“We are professional enough to understand what is required of us in our roles. We all acknowledge our duties, responsibilities, and the most significant priorities. Conversations regarding my departure are not urgent at this moment, perhaps they can wait for the future,” Riveiro stated.

“There will be a time to discuss that. Just a week ago, we talked about the importance of not fixating on these matters currently and keeping our attention on what truly matters for the club, our match on Wednesday [vs MC Alger].

“We need to give everything we have to secure our place in the semi-finals, more deserving than our rivals. MC Alger presents a tough challenge, as will be evident on the field, and we must limit their ability to play. That is our primary focus at this time – we cannot allow ourselves to be distracted by future considerations.”

The Sea Robbers are keen to reach the CAF Champions League semi-finals for the first time since the 2012/13 season as they face MC Alger in the second leg of their quarter-final showdown at Orlando Stadium on Wednesday (18:00), holding a slight 1-0 aggregate advantage.
