Barker Secures Positions for Chiefs and Pirates Before Zamalek Clash

Stellenbosch FC’s head coach, Steve Barker, has shared insights regarding the historic matchup between Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, particularly concerning their crucial second leg of the CAF Confederations Cup quarterfinals against Zamalek in Egypt.

The South African debutants in continental play held their ground during the first leg last week in Cape Town, successfully stopping the defending champions with a goalless draw, which marked their first encounter in this competition.

As the return leg approaches on Wednesday (18:00) at Cairo International Stadium, Barker is acutely aware of the challenges posed by the two-time CAF Confederations Cup champions, especially when they perform at home amidst a passionate fanbase.

“Zamalek has more than just a few outstanding players; their team is packed with match-winners, so we need to remain cautious. Playing in their environment, we anticipate a vibrant crowd providing them with motivation,” Barker stated.

“There are key players in their squad that we must keep an eye on. We observed in the final moments of our last encounter that if given time and room in crucial zones, they can be very threatening.”

Concerning the Zamalek ultras, Barker believes that his players’ prior experiences against teams like Chiefs and Pirates, which had less crowd support at home, will serve them well as they prepare to face the White Knights. His squad is unfazed by the prospect of an Egyptian crowd in a packed stadium.

“We actually embrace the idea of a large audience; in the end, footballers thrive on entertainment. We look for chances to play in large stadiums filled with enthusiastic fans,” the 57-year-old coach pointed out.

“At home, we frequently go head-to-head with clubs like Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates that draw sizable crowds, and we use that energy to boost our performance. We’re thrilled to showcase our identity and highlight our players’ skills in front of a supportive crowd.”

The team from Cape Winelands is determined to pull off the remarkable achievement of reaching the semifinals at the expense of the Egyptian powerhouses, while the seasoned hosts will aim to thwart an upset from the continental newcomers.
