Pyramids FC encountered a nail-biting conclusion but ultimately progressed to the CAF Champions League semi-finals, despite suffering a 2-0 defeat against a rejuvenated AS FAR at Stade d’Honneur Stadium in Morocco on Tuesday evening.
The home team quickly showed their intent, with Youssef El Fahli finding the net in the eighth minute. Second-half substitute Joel Beya boosted the Moroccan lead just 11 minutes into his appearance, setting up a captivating finish.
In their previous match, the Egyptian side achieved a resounding 4-1 victory at home, featuring a brace from the celebrated DRC striker Fiston Mayele. Mayele scored once again in Meknes, but his goal was ruled out.
Next, the knockout newcomers are set to challenge either South Africa’s Orlando Pirates, the defending cup champions, or Algerian titleholders MC Alger, as the two teams compete for the final semi-final berth at Orlando Stadium on Wednesday (18:00), where the Pirates currently lead 1-0 on aggregate.
Pyramids will start their semi-final tie away on April 18, before returning to host the crucial second leg in front of their fans in Egypt on April 25, as they pursue a spot in the final of Africa’s top club competition.
