Reigning champions Al Ahly advanced to the semi-finals of the CAF Champions League with a 1-0 victory over Sudanese stronghold Al-Hilal Omdurman during the second leg of their quarter-final clash in Mauritania on Tuesday night.
Star player Emam Ashour scored the decisive goal in the 80th minute, securing the win after a hard-fought battle where both teams struggled to find the net. The 27-year-old winger dashed Florent Ibenge’s ambitions of taking the Sudanese club deeper into the competition.
The Egyptian giants progressed with a 2-0 aggregate score, having achieved a 1-0 win at home last week, courtesy of Mohamed Hany’s first-half strike in the initial leg in Cairo, granting the Red Devils a slight advantage leading into the return match.
Marcell Koller’s team will now resume their rivalry with South African champions Mamelodi Sundowns in the semi-finals of Africa’s premier club tournament, following the Brazilians’ 1-0 aggregate win over Tunisian powerhouses Esperance de Tunis.
The record 12-time African champions will head to South Africa for the first leg of their encounter against Miguel Cardoso’s side on 18 April, before returning to Cairo for the second leg on 25 April, all in pursuit of a spot in the final.
