PLYMOUTH ARGYLE has released a statement announcing the departure of Wayne Rooney from his managerial position.
The iconic figure from Manchester United and the England national team has left his role, with the Pilgrims currently at the bottom of the Championship standings.
The club made the announcement, stating: “Plymouth Argyle can confirm that the club and head coach Wayne Rooney have mutually agreed to part ways effective immediately.
“In addition to Rooney, assistant head coach Mike Phelan and first-team coach Simon Ireland will also be leaving.
“First-team coach Kevin Nancekivell and club captain Joe Edwards will take charge of the team for the upcoming Championship match against Bristol City on New Year’s Day. Goalkeeping coach Daryl Flahavan will remain in his position.
“We express our gratitude to Wayne and his team for their contributions and wish them success in their future endeavors.
“The club will refrain from making further comments for the time being and will provide updates regarding our new first team management staff in due course.”
Rooney shared his thoughts, stating: “I want to take this opportunity to thank the board of Plymouth Argyle Football Club, particularly Simon Hallett and Neil Dewsnip, with whom I formed strong relationships.
“I am grateful to the staff for their warm reception, and I thank the players and fans for their continued support during my time as head coach. I wish everyone the best moving forward.
“To the Green Army, thank you for making my time at Home Park unforgettable. Those memories will be cherished forever.
“Special thanks to my coaching staff, Kevin Nancekivell, Simon Ireland, Darryl Flahavan, and Mike Phelan for their guidance, commitment, assistance, and support.
“Plymouth Argyle will always mean a lot to me, and I will continue to follow their progress with great interest.”
Rooney’s stewardship came to an end after a frustrating nine-match winless run.
The 39-year-old achieved just four victories out of 23 league encounters.
Argyle conceded the highest number of goals (51) and netted the fewest (22) in the division.
The team currently sits four points adrift of safety in the Championship.
This marks the fourth managerial position Rooney has left in as many years, jeopardizing his management career.
He initially took charge at Derby County, successfully steering them clear of relegation in the 2020/21 season.
Nevertheless, a substantial 21-point deduction due to administration resulted in relegation the following year.
Rooney then moved to the U.S., joining a struggling DC United.
Despite a bright start, he was unable to guide them into the playoffs and mutually parted ways at the conclusion of the 2023 season.
He subsequently returned to the Championship with Birmingham, but lasted only 15 matches before being let go.
