FANS voiced their astonishment with comments like “this is awkward” after realizing that Wayne Rooney appeared on Plymouth’s 2025 calendar following his sudden exit on New Year’s Eve.
Earlier today, Rooney along with the Championship team confirmed that they have mutually decided to part ways after just six months.
This mutual decision comes while Plymouth finds itself at the bottom of the Championship standings.
Argyle is currently on a winless streak of nine matches, sitting four points adrift of safety.
In spite of the situation, both the club and Rooney released positive statements following their separation on New Year’s Eve.
However, fans quickly noticed an uncomfortable aspect of their official Plymouth Argyle calendar for the upcoming year.
This much sought-after item was exchanged as Christmas gifts between many club enthusiasts.
In light of Rooney’s exit, numerous individuals were shocked to see his picture prominently displayed for January.
One supporter humorously noted: “Well, this is awkward.”
Another quipped: “They placed him in January, and he didn’t even last that long!”

Wayne Rooney’s record-breaking career

WAYNE Rooney made headlines in the football world when he debuted in 2002 with Everton.
He quickly etched his name in history by becoming the club’s youngest-ever goalscorer at just 16 years and 342 days, earning the title of BBC’s Young Sports Personality of the Year.
In 2004, he transferred to Manchester United, where he played for 13 years, participating in 559 matches and scoring 253 goals, making him the club’s all-time leading scorer.
Following his tenure with United, Rooney returned to Everton for one season before continuing his career with D.C. United and Derby County for a season each.
Moreover, Rooney is England’s second-highest goalscorer with 53 goals over 120 matches, second only to Harry Kane.
Upon retirement, this England icon transitioned into management.
He took charge at Derby County in 2020 and successfully avoided relegation during his first year.
However, after a 21-point deduction the next season, he could not prevent the team’s relegation and eventually left.
Rooney then had a 15-month stint managing MLS side D.C. United but departed after a lackluster finish at the end of the 2023 regular season.
In October 2023, he controversially accepted a role at Birmingham, taking over a team that was sixth in the Championship.
However, after managing 15 matches with nine losses and only two wins, he was relieved of his position in January 2024, with the club sitting in 20th place, which ultimately led to their relegation at the end of the season.
He then resumed management in May with Plymouth Argyle but achieved only five victories in 25 matches, leaving him jobless once more.
Today, while announcing Rooney’s departure, the club remarked: “Plymouth Argyle can confirm that the club and Head Coach Wayne Rooney have mutually agreed to part ways with immediate effect.
“Alongside Rooney, Assistant Head Coach Mike Phelan and first team coach Simon Ireland will also leave the club.
“First team coach Kevin Nancekivell and Club Captain Joe Edwards will oversee the team for our Sky Bet Championship match against Bristol City on New Year’s Day. Daryl Flahavan will remain as Goalkeeping coach.
“We thank Wayne and his team for their contributions and wish them success in their future endeavors.
“The club will provide updates regarding our new first team management staff in due course.”
Rooney also issued a statement, expressing: “I want to take this opportunity to thank the Board of Plymouth Argyle Football Club, particularly Simon Hallett and Neil Dewsnip, with whom I had strong relationships.
“I’m thankful to all the staff for their warm welcome and for making the club a remarkable place, and to the players and fans for their support during my tenure as Head Coach. I wish them all the best in the future.
“To the Green Army, thank you for making the games at Home Park truly special; these are memories we will cherish forever.
“I would also like to extend my gratitude to my coaching staff Kevin Nancekivell, Simon Ireland, Darryl Flahavan, and Mike Phelan for their expertise, dedication, and support.
“Plymouth Argyle will always hold a special place in my heart, and I will continue to follow and cheer for their results.”
