Kaizer Chiefs’ head coach Nasreddine Nabi has underlined the importance of Mdu Shabalala maintaining consistent performances, while also acknowledging the considerable pressure the young star endures as a key player for the squad.
During the Betway Premiership showdown at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Sunday, Shabalala scored a spectacular goal against Chippa United, astonishing four defenders before unleashing a powerful shot at the near post that left goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali with no chance.
This crucial victory not only ended Chiefs’ three-match winless streak but also closed out 2024 on a high note, lifting them into the league’s top eight with 15 points after 10 matches.
Shabalala’s strike against Chippa solidifies his standing as Chiefs’ leading scorer in the league, with four goals—one ahead of teammate Ranga Chivaviro.
“I prefer to avoid singling out individual players, as I place great importance on teamwork and a collective effort,” Nabi stated in his post-match comments at Moses Mabhida Stadium.
“Shabalala has demonstrated potential, yet his displays need to be more consistent. We acknowledge the high expectations placed on him as a player for a distinguished club like Kaizer Chiefs, which can create significant pressure.
“This explains the variability in his performances, but we must keep in mind that he is still young. We want to congratulate him on his winning goal while stressing the importance of sustaining a consistent standard. We hope that other young players can draw lessons from his experience.”
Chiefs look to build on this success as they get ready to face Cape Town City at DHL Stadium on January 5, 2025.
