As previously reported by Sportswire, Magesi FC has made the official announcement of Owen da Gama as their new head coach.
Da Gama succeeds Clinton Larsen, who resigned last weekend following Magesi’s 3-0 defeat to All-Stars during the Carling Cup at Orlando Stadium.
The club initially announced that Papi Zothwane would be stepping in as the interim head coach, with Jackie Ledwaba providing assistance.
Both Zothwane and Ledwaba were part of the coaching team during Magesi’s 1-0 loss to Orlando Pirates in the Betway Premiership at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday, while da Gama watched the game from the stands.
The 63-year-old coach brings a wealth of experience, having previously worked with teams such as Platinum Stars, South Africa’s U-23 national squad, and serving as the interim manager for Bafana Bafana, Highlands Park, Sekhukhune United, TS Galaxy, and Black Leopards (from which he departed in June). He is now in search of a new challenge.
Notably, similar to his predecessor Larsen, da Gama has found success in the Carling Knockout Cup, clinching the trophy with Silver Stars in 2006 when it was still known as the Telkom Knockout.
With his previous coaching experience at Orlando Pirates, da Gama is expected to promptly turn around Magesi’s fortunes. The club currently sits at the bottom of the league table, having earned only six points from 10 matches, and has played two fewer games than 15th-placed Richards Bay.
Da Gama’s first match as head coach of Magesi is scheduled against his former team, TS Galaxy, at Mbombela Stadium on 4 January 2025.
