Hugo Sotil, Barcelona Legend and Iconic Partner of Johan Cruyff, Dies at 75 After Health Struggles

Hugo Sotil, a legendary figure of Barcelona, has sadly passed away at the age of 75.

The Peruvian footballer was hospitalized earlier this month due to a “health issue.”

Doctors placed Sotil in intensive care as they tried to stabilize his condition.

Tragically, the former striker was unable to recover and passed away on Monday.

Barcelona confirmed his death with a poignant statement, which included: “On Monday, December 30, Hugo Sotil passed away.”

“Born on May 18, 1949, in Ica, Peru, ‘Cholo’, as he was affectionately known, is celebrated as one of the greatest South American players of his time and was a beloved figure among fans during his stint at the club.”

The striker joined Barcelona in the 1973/74 season after moving from the Peruvian club Municipal de Lima.

“Sotil was a crucial member of a team that featured legends such as Johan Cruyff, [Juan Manuel] Asensi, [Carlos] Rexach, and Marcial [Pina].

“He captivated the Camp Nou crowd, who would chant ‘Cholooo, Cholooo’ in his honor.”

A statement on social media read: “FC Barcelona mourns the passing of Hugo Sotil, who played for the club from 1973 to 1976, and sends its condolences to his family and friends.

“Rest in peace, Cholo.”
