Cardoso Shines at Sundowns: The Ideal Asset They Needed

Mamelodi Sundowns’ head coach Miguel Cardoso has effectively implemented squad rotation, recognizing the demanding fixture schedule and the need for ongoing victories, unlike his predecessor Manqoba Mngqithi.

While Mngqithi struggled to achieve quality play and outcomes amid squad changes, alongside increasing tensions within the team at the start of the season, Cardoso appears to have found the right equilibrium in his initial four matches as coach.

This approach is crucial for Sundowns, especially with the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup in June, where maintaining player fitness will be vital.

Since Cardoso assumed control, only young defender Malibongwe Khoza has featured in all four wins. Khoza’s impressive growth could earn him a place in the Bafana Bafana squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Sundowns extended their winning streak against Richards Bay at the King Zwelithini Stadium on Saturday, once again making adjustments to the starting lineup. Despite facing a few minor obstacles, the victory was an expected outcome. Cardoso’s method resembles that of Liverpool manager Arne Slot, who expertly handles squad rotations while maintaining high performance levels and consistent results.

This reflects a skilled manager, ensuring all his players remain satisfied.

“I must acknowledge that the situation calls for me to adapt my usual style,” he remarked.

“I generally prefer to limit changes; I recognize this. However, we must face reality as our schedule is quite demanding.

“Some players in our group have been recovering from prolonged injuries, as has been publicly highlighted.

“A few are approaching full fitness and will soon rejoin the team. Mosa Lebusa is likely to make a return, and Marcelo Allende will join us as well.

“Given the diverse situations we encounter, we must manage our recovery. Occasionally, a player may be suited for a match based on their capabilities, and it might be wiser to include another player who can deliver the necessary performance.

“With Iqraam Rayners, it was about giving him a breather to avoid exposing him to the physicality he faced in earlier matches.

“Meanwhile, we have a substantial roster of players. I also need to focus on those training at home because they may be called upon at any moment, as we did against Bay.

“It’s important that they feel we will provide them with opportunities, ready to support them and prepare when needed.

“A single player can significantly influence the outcome. Tashreeq Matthews is on the mend from a long-term injury and possesses great potential; he is young yet can make a substantial contribution.

“I don’t want to highlight any individual player because I believe we are all working together. My focus is on our daily efforts, ensuring that when the time comes, whether due to rotation or injuries, we are ready to respond effectively.”
