Ronnie Gabriel, co-coach of Richards Bay, highlights the urgent necessity to secure points against Mamelodi Sundowns given their precarious standing in the league.
Richards Bay is set to take on Sundowns in a Betway Premiership match at King Zwelithini Stadium this Saturday (15:30), as they seek to achieve their second consecutive victory of the season.
The KwaZulu-Natal side currently occupies the second-to-last position, with eight points from 11 games, just two points ahead of the bottom-placed Magesi FC.
Despite their historically unfavorable results against Sundowns, Gabriel remains hopeful about his team’s ability to secure a positive result against the league leaders.
“We recognize that Mamelodi Sundowns are a formidable opponent and the dominant force in South African football,” Gabriel remarked.
“Thorough preparation is crucial; we need to meticulously analyze all aspects. It’s imperative that we gather points from this match, as we cannot afford to let them slip away.”
Gabriel, who guided the team to a win over Golden Arrows in their most recent match, expressed the need for a more consistent fixture schedule to build better momentum.
The victory against Arrows occurred on 14 December, resulting in a long gap before their next game.
“Ideally, we would like to have more frequent matches. The current schedule often creates congestion at certain times while leading to prolonged breaks at others, which can affect performance. We can’t ignore this,” he noted.
“Nonetheless, we must concentrate on the future and ensure that the team is well-prepared.”
