LIVERPOOL player Luis Diaz’s father has been admitted to a hospital in Colombia with chest pains, just 13 months after enduring a 12-day kidnapping ordeal.
Luis Manuel Diaz, 58, a father of four, is currently receiving tests after being transferred to a specialized facility from a local hospital in Barrancas, where he was first admitted yesterday morning.
After being stabilized and given oxygen at Our Lady of Pilar Hospital, he was transferred to the Cesar Cardiovascular Institute in Valledupar, located about a 90-minute drive away.
As reported by local news outlet El Pilon, Luis Manuel, also known as ‘Mane’ in Colombia, is expected to undergo cardiac catheterization shortly.
This standard procedure entails threading a flexible tube, known as a catheter, through a blood vessel to the heart; however, his family has refuted claims that he suffered a heart attack. Medical professionals are investigating if his chest discomfort may be related to a strained muscle.
The footballer’s father has not spoken about his health issues on social media.
However, he was quoted by local journalist Hamilton Daza, stating: “I thank God for keeping me healthy again.
“I’m a bit worried, but thankfully everything is alright; it’s nothing severe.
“The doctors have assured me it’s just some pain and not associated with heart problems.
“There’s no need for anyone to be concerned. ‘Mane’ will be around for a while.”
He is expected to be discharged in time to celebrate the New Year with his family at home.
The specialized hospital where Diaz’s father is receiving treatment confirmed in a statement issued yesterday: “Luis Manuel Diaz Jimenez is currently hospitalized in our facility undergoing comprehensive specialized medical care.
Emotional moment Luis Diaz’s dad breaks down in stands after son’s double against Brazil following kidnapping ordeal
“He will remain under vigilant management and observation to ensure the best health results and a speedy return to his family.”
Meanwhile, Diaz was a substitute during his team’s 3-1 Boxing Day victory over Leicester, remaining unused by manager Arne Slot.
His father’s kidnapping ordeal ended after a harrowing 12 days, resulting in his release during a handover involving a Colombian priest near the Venezuelan border on November 9 last year.
Throughout this difficult period, Diaz continued to play, scoring a vital goal after coming on as a substitute in Liverpool’s November 5, 2023 victory over Luton, before returning to Colombia for international duties and experiencing an emotional reunion with his father post-release.
He later netted two goals for his national team in a historic win against Brazil, a match his father attended from the stands.
The ELN, designated as a terrorist organization by the U.S. government and the EU, claimed responsibility for the kidnapping prior to Luis Manuel’s release.
One of the kidnappers, a friend of Luis Manuel named Yerdinson Bolivar Bolivar, received a prison sentence of just over four years in October after admitting his involvement in the abduction.
Three additional suspects apprehended in relation to the crime are currently awaiting trial.
