Magesi FC has appointed former Orlando Pirates coach Owen da Gama as their new head coach.
Da Gama succeeds Clinton Larsen, who resigned following the team’s 3-0 defeat to All Stars in last weekend’s Carling Cup.
This loss marked Magesi’s fourth consecutive defeat after their impressive victory against Mamelodi Sundowns in the Carling Knockout Cup final. Currently at the bottom of the league standings with only six points from nine matches, Magesi is in desperate need of a turnaround.
After Larsen’s departure, Papi Zothwane was initially brought in as the interim coach; however, the club has since chosen the extensive experience of da Gama.
“Owen da Gama has officially joined Magesi FC,” a source from Sportswire confirmed.
Da Gama, whose coaching career includes previous positions at Platinum Stars, Highlands Park, TS Galaxy, and Black Leopards, will begin his duties right away. He is expected to work alongside the current coaching staff, which features fitness coach Pedro Picarro and goalkeeper coach Fiston Kabwanga—both of whom were appointed by Larsen.
Da Gama’s first match will be a challenging one against his former club, Orlando Pirates, at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday at 15:30.
