Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has drawn parallels between the Betway Premiership and the French Ligue 1, where he previously managed Nantes.
He mentioned that his time in France has been beneficial in navigating matches in the PSL, as the league focuses on quick counterattacks.
Cardoso took over at Nantes in June 2018 but was relieved of his duties in October after overseeing just eight matches. During his brief spell, he managed to win only one game against RC Strasbourg Alsace, suffering four defeats and drawing the rest.
Despite his fleeting stint at Nantes, he has had a flawless start with Sundowns, winning all three games since his appointment following the dismissal of Manqoba Mngqithi.
The Portuguese coach began his tenure with victories over Raja Casablanca, Stellenbosch, and AmaZulu, the last of which took place on Tuesday.
They secured a win in that match with Bafana Bafana forward Iqraam Rayners scoring a header in the final moments to secure all three points in Durban.
“It’s a league filled with highly competitive teams,” Cardoso stated.
“I’m keen to learn more as we move through the fixtures, analyzing the teams and noting their physicality and pace, which remind me of my time at Nantes in France.
“We encountered fast and counter-attacking play, and back then, I approached the game with a touch of naivety.
“I now feel more grounded and have a better grasp of how opposing teams can challenge us, allowing us to mitigate those threats.
“Therefore, we must adjust to this style of play.”
Following their victory over AmaZulu, which was a closely contested affair decided by a single goal, Sundowns will return to Durban to face Richards Bay at King Zwelithini Stadium on Saturday (15:30).
