Nathan Aspinall believes that elite darts competitors have reached a level of fame comparable to rock stars within the realm of sports.
The Asp, 33, has made a significant impact on his family’s life by amassing millions in earnings from the sport over recent years.
The increasing visibility and promotion of the sport can be credited to the rise of gifted young talent Luke Littler, who is in the same management group as Aspinall.
Aspinall, a two-time major champion from Stockport, observes that it has become rare for him to step out without being asked for a selfie.
He compares this scenario to the recognition faced by Jimmy White, Steve Davis, Alex Higgins, and Tony Knowles during snooker’s booming phase about four decades ago.
Barry Hearn‘s Matchroom stable even had a chart-topping song with Chas & Dave in 1986.
Aspinall is prepared to take on Andrew Gilding in the PDC World Championship’s third round on Friday afternoon after besting Leonard Gates.
The Asp stated: “Being in the limelight can be difficult.
“I feel we are similar to the snooker stars of the 80s, who mingled with rock legends like Guns N’ Roses.
“Nowadays, everyone seeks to connect with darts players. The surge in darts’ popularity is undeniable, in part thanks to 17-year-old Luke Littler.

“Other players, like myself, Michael Smith, and Gezzy Price, are very approachable to fans.
“Nights out in Manchester on a Friday are something else.

“It’s remarkable, but I choose to see it in a positive light. It’s amazing that darts has ascended to such levels. Until this year, I didn’t consider myself a celebrity, but it now appears that I am.
“People genuinely enjoy meeting me and capturing photos.
“The triumphs of Littler and Luke Humphries over the past year have been exceptional.
“Every darts player I know in the top 16 appreciates their success because it benefits all of us by providing opportunities to thrive and earn well.
“As for whether I associate with rock stars? I am close friends with the members of The Blossoms.
“We attended school together. The major difference today is how social media influences everything, wouldn’t you agree?”
