
Tragedy has struck as Olympic snowboarder Sophie Hediger has tragically died at the tender age of 26.
On Monday, Hediger lost her life due to an avalanche at the ski resort in Arosa, Switzerland.
A devoted member of Switzerland’s snowboard cross national team, Hediger represented her country at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.
In the 2023-24 season, she celebrated her first two podium finishes in the World Cup competitions.
Walter Reusser, the Swiss-Ski sport chief executive, shared his deep sorrow, stating: “We are left in shock, and our hearts go out to Sophie’s family, to whom we extend our heartfelt condolences.
“For the Swiss-Ski family, Sophie’s untimely passing has cast a shadow over the forthcoming Christmas season. Our grief is immeasurable.”
The FIS Snowboard World Championships are set to take place in St Moritz this coming March.
Earlier this year, Hediger secured an impressive second place in an event held in St Moritz in January.
At the time of her death, she was in a relationship with Swiss ice hockey player Dario Wuthrich.
The HC Ambri Piotta club conveyed their sincere condolences regarding Hediger’s passing.
They announced on X: “The Ambrì-Piotta Hockey Club joins Dario Wuthrich in mourning the unexpected and tragic loss of his beloved partner Sophie.
“Our thoughts are with Sophie’s family and Dario, sending a warm embrace from the entire white and blue family.”
Swiss Olympic snowboarder Jan Scherrer expressed his sadness on Instagram, saying: “This breaks my heart. We will always keep you in our memories, Sophie.
“Stay safe, everyone!”
