Magesi, the Carling Knockout champions, have appointed Papi Zothwane as their new head coach, replacing Clinton Larsen.
Larsen unexpectedly resigned following a 3-0 loss to the Carling All-Stars during a televised match at Orlando Stadium on Saturday.
“Papi Zothwane has been named the interim head coach and will be assisted by coach Jacky Ledwaba,” the club shared on X.
Larsen’s exit was anticipated due to the considerable difficulties faced by the club. Reports suggest he was deprived of adequate resources, such as a video analyst, and often confronted logistical issues, including the team’s arrival on match day.
Before the Carling Knockout Cup final against Mamelodi Sundowns, Larsen reportedly asked for players to travel two days prior to the match for proper acclimatization; however, this request was declined.
Furthermore, players not chosen for the match were instructed to travel to Polokwane at 5:00 AM on match day and return immediately after the game, which is said to have unsettled Larsen.
Since their stunning victory over Sundowns in the Carling Knockout final, Magesi has suffered four straight defeats across all competitions, currently sitting at the bottom of the table with only six points from nine matches.
Zothwane’s inaugural match as head coach will be a crucial encounter against Orlando Pirates in Polokwane on December 29.
